The Unfortunate Cow

by Robin Mandel Benowitz

I flubbed my line in our school play.
I made a little gaffe.
My mom says no one noticed,
But I swear I heard a laugh.

I don't know how it happened.
This morning things were fine.
I practiced seven hundred times.
I only had one line.

I said it in the shower,
And lounging on my bed.
I knew it forwards, backwards, sideways,
Standing on my head.

But everything felt different
When I stood before that crowd.
My head was all kerjumbled.
My heart was beating loud.

My voice was clear and strong.
It didn't squeak or wobble.
The trouble is my line was, "Moo!"
And I said, "Gobble, gobble!"
