I Pledge Allegiance

by Timothy Tocher

I pledge allegiance to the floor,
the walls and ceiling, classroom door.
I pledge allegiance to my books,
to desk and papers, coat-rack hooks.
I pledge allegiance to my bag,
to Joni’s pigtails—and the flag.
